Colorado-Wyoming District - Optimist International
CCDHH 2010
Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The CCDHH season has begun! The district finals will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, April 12th, 2010
at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs.
Between now and then, students wanting to participate in the contest will need your help.
Typically the number of students for CCDHH is very small; last year saw 11 at the finals.
We hope that number will grow but each student must be sponsored by an Optimist Club.
If you know a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student, CCDHH is a great opportunity for that child
to gain valuable public speaking experience. If you don't, that's OK, but please be ready to
sponsor any student that finds you or that I connect you with.
This year's topic is the same as the Oratorical contest, "Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem".
More information can be found at Oratorical Information.
Here is what a sponsoring club is required to do:
If a club receives more than 3 students in either category (sign language presentation or oral presentation),
then the club must hold a contest to select the top 3. Club contest information can be found at
Club Contest Info
Assist the student with filling out the Contest Application form.
Verify that the student has a current audiogram dated since 04/20/2009.
Sign the application as Sponsoring Club. Send a copy of the application and audiogram to me at:
- Sam Bartley
- 3272 Foxtail Ct.
- Colorado Springs, CO 80920
Encourage the student to practice their presentation at one of your club meetings.
If the student uses a sign language interpreter, the club must provide one if the student cannot;
chances are they can provide one, but be aware of this.
Attend the Contest Finals and support your student if you can!
CO/WY clubs are also encouraged to support the "Help Them Hear" fund from their club budget.
"Help Them Hear" provides an additional $1,500 in scholarship money each year to our winners!
Below is the text of the email that is going out to teachers and parents. If you have a contact at a school
or school district office, please let me know.
Thank you very much for your help, and don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have!
